What do you enjoy most about your work with TFMS?
What I enjoy most about working with TFMS is helping the clients who come in. Our justice system is very complex and confusing, especially for someone encountering it for the first time. I have found that most clients coming in are just overwhelmed by the surplus of information thrown their way and do not know where to start. I enjoy seeing them leave feeling more hopeful and with a clearer directive on where to go for support and where to find the resources they need.
How do you feel court-connected services help address access to justice issues?
I feel that the main way that court-connected services address access to justice issues is by being free or affordable. A large portion of the clients coming through our services cannot afford to have a lawyer walk them through the court process or direct them to different resources. Having a court-connected service that allows them to sit down with someone and be given resources specific to them for free, removes a lot of stress and anxiety around the court process itself. Also, offering faster more affordable services, such as subsidized mediation, opens the door to more low-income families to find equally just solutions to their issues despite their limited income.
What do you do when you are not working as a mediator and/or IRC?
When I am not working as an IRC I am either working as a bartender at my other job which allows me to continue being social and cater to people’s needs (although in a different atmosphere) or I am travelling, hiking or reading which are the hobbies I find bring me the most comfort and peace.
